How did the pathways of four yoga teachers intersect?
Saundra began teaching donation based yoga in 2019 at the Hastings Arts Center. Along the way, she met Julie, a yoga teacher in Hastings for over 10 years. They started to discuss the idea of finding a dedicated space to share for yoga.
Alexis and Jessie are best friends and completed their YTT together in 2023. They are navigating young families while fulfilling a dream of opening a studio together.
The four met through Rivertown Yogi classes and began to discuss the idea of a yoga co-op model studio. In May 2024, they noticed an available space in downtown Hastings, and discussed its use as a collaborative studio for yoga, movement, and sound.
After some deliberation, they all decided to take a leap forward and form the Spiral Yoga collaborative. They will work as independent contractors with a shared space and mission of providing a safe and inclusive atmosphere to begin, enrich, and grow your yoga practice.
The building at 312 E. Second Street in Hastings, MN holds a lot of character. The charming front door, original to the building, along with the three large northeast facing windows flanked by pillars drew us all in. The building had previously been partitioned off as 3 separate office spaces, but with walls removed is now a spacious single room with tall ceilings. Built in 1870, it is rumored to have hosted a barber shop and butcher shop. Current renovations have been underway since June 2024. The newly remodeled space will host all new walls, ceilings, electrical, and flooring. We are anxiously awaiting completion of the project, and anticipate an opening in early 2025.
The spiral theme is embedded in our local history, and also holds symbolic meaning in yoga.
The iconic spiral bridge that originally spanned the Mississippi River into downtown Hastings holds a significant place in local history, and is displayed in numerous photos and artwork around town.
In ancient cultures the spiral has generally reflected the journey of life as it continuously unfolds, representing the constant change life presents, and is an emblem of ongoing growth and strength. The spiral is also a modern day symbol of gratitude, originating in Celtic culture.
In yoga, the spiral reflects the inward journey of self discovery we take to truly know and love ourselves. Our yoga practice encourages us to turn inward to cultivate gratitude, balance, and peace. The journey is never-ending, and helps us to meet life's challenges with more power and wisdom.
